Happy Wednesday! Last month my husband Vlad and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary! We celebrated the big day with brunch, then sat down together and looked through our wedding pictures and video. It brought back so many amazing memories from our wedding day, like our first kiss as husband and wife and cutting our delicious wedding cake. We also loved having the whole day on film to watch on our anniversary, everything thing from the ceremony, to our first dance and all the special speeches people gave. While going through all of these special memories we remembered that we still hadn’t shared our wedding story on the blog, so we put together this wedding post to share our special day with you!
Shortly after getting engaged Christmas morning Vlad and I decided to see if it were be possible to get married THAT summer! We chose a few dates in July and August that we liked and worked for us then started looking for venues. The first venue we visited was Hockley Valley Resort. It was a beautiful property, but the distance from Toronto was too far and the price of the venue was too much for our budget. We then found a hotel near London, Ontario that was well within our price range but the long drive to the hotel made us realized that is was too far for our all of our Guests. After being slightly discouraged we visited The Doctor’s House in Kleinburg. After visiting once we knew it was the one so we came back to visit with our families in February. Everyone loved the venue so we decided to take the leap and get married August 1st!
The Venue: The Doctor’s House Kleinburg, Ontario
When we were looking at venues we were seeking something very specific. We didn’t want a typical wedding hall for our venue. We were looking for something small and intimate with a rustic feel. When Vlad & I visited The Doctors House in January we knew it was the venue for us! The old chapel was everything I had imagined and The Garden Room was the perfect combination of rustic charm that brought the outdoors in. We both loved the large windows overlooking the garden and the beautiful high ceilings with wooden beams that made the room feel so perfect and special.
In the summer a private patio is opened infront of the room where your guests can enjoy cocktail hour and be served horderves while enjoying a beautiful view of the garden. For the fall and winter the space has two fireplaces that can be lit for a warm intimate feel. The food was absolutely delicious, all of our guested enjoyed their meals and many compliments were given to the chef. Another great thing about The Doctor’s House was their in house officiant that performed ceremonies at the property on a regular bases. I highly recommend scheduling a meeting with them to hear more about what they have to offer (they offer Skype meetings too!) Using the in house officiant is a great way to check off two things off the to-do list while knowing that they are familiar with the venue and share their experience to ensure your ceremony runs smoothly.
Ceremony: LaBuick Ceremonies
Our Ceremony was held in the 1800s style Chapel located on The Doctor’s House property on August 1st 2015. The ceremony was preformed by Dennis from Labuick Ceremonies. It was such a pleasure to work with him and his wife Pat. They were so accommodating to ensure our ceremony was exactly how we wanted. They gave us guidance for the readings and our vows because we decided we didn’t want to write our own for the ceremony. Pat & Dennis also took time to Skype with us so we could discuss our values, believes and how we pictured our overall ceremony. I found it really helpful Dennis was available the night of our rehearsal dinner, which made everything run smoothly that night and the day of the wedding. I would highly recommend Labuick Ceremonies if your an Ontario Bride looking for an officiant, they made our ceremony feel so special and they were a pleasure to work with.
Dress: Pronovias – Barquilla via Mona Richie Boutique
Now for the most exciting part. My dress! I had such an amazing experience dress shopping at Mona Richie Boutique. I went to “just look” and ended up falling in love with my dress that same day. Although Mona has over 1000 wedding dresses I only tried on 3 and knew the second one was the dress of my dreams. It was designed by Pronovias on style Barquilla and handmade in Spain. We ordered the dress in February and it arrived in June for my fittings. Mona herself did all of my fittings and I must have had around 7 because I would lose weight or make a change. No matter what she was always so accommodating, even after a last minute change to my vail a few days before the wedding.
I also took my Bridesmaids to Mona Richie Boutique to pick of their dresses for the wedding. I told them it had to be long and Navy but gave them the freedom to choose whatever they liked and felt comfortable in. All of the girls choose dresses from Bill Levkoff. If you wondering about the styles of the dress leave me a comment below and I will try to find out. The dresses were all really beautiful but their was an issue with a seam on one of them. Mona was so amazing and helped fix everything with a big smile on her face. I had such a good experience at Mona’s that we went back and got my sister’s wedding dress from her too.
Flowers: Royal Orchid Florist Decor: D.I.Y
The flowers for our wedding were all created by Royal Orchid Florist, my Mum had used them before so I knew they would be perfect for our wedding day. In January, shortly after booking the wedding I found the perfect centerpiece while out shopping at Ikea. They were white lanterns that we ended up spray painting gold. I showed the florist a picture of the lantern and she created a plan for all the flowers. They had worked with venue on many occasions so they had lots of suggestions for decorating the chapel and how to incorporate everything into the reception. Their team was amazing they day of the wedding, everything was absolutely perfect when we arrived. All of the details were just right and they even created bouquets of roses for a decorative accent on our wedding cake. We were so happy with our experience and at the end of the night when they went above and beyond and took care of our huge chalkboard frame that we had totally left behind. Again, we had such a positive experience working with such a talented team, I’d highly recommend them for any Toronto Bride.
Cake: Short & Sweet Cupcakes
Let me just start by saying I love cake but especially cupcakes so when it came to our wedding cake we both knew we wanted cupcakes! We had tried Short & Sweet Cupcakes a few times and I knew we had to go straight to them for a tasting. After one bite we knew they were the ones and discussed with them our idea of a cupcake table but still wanting a traditional cake for a picture of us cutting the cake. We came up with the idea to have both! We had a 2 tier chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream and cupcakes in the flavours Diamonds & Pearls, Penguin Suit, Caramela Soprano. Their were also two larger ones of each of our favourite flavors on display,Diamonds & Pearls for me and Penguin Suit for Vlad. After we cut the cake we saved the top layer of the cake and froze it to eat for our engagement anniversary around Christmas very soon. Stay tuned for the photo’s 😉
Photography: Focus Photography
Last but not least something that Nicci felt was most important, the photography and video. After speaking with the Focus team at the Toronto Bridal show I had a pretty good idea that I wanted to work with Focus Photography. They seemed professional and had a huge amount of experience with weddings. On the day of the wedding they captured every moment and didn’t miss a thing. They provided us with over 500 edited pictures of our wedding day as well as all of the RAW pictures and video they shot that day. The video was absolutely amazing and was the best decision we made. If your’e considering skipped the videography I highly recommend you reconsider. We love rewatching our video and I know I’ll love it more in 50 years. We were also very happy when they gave us an edited picture that we could post on social media before leaving for our honeymoon. And when we came home the wait wasn’t too long before we got all of our pictures and video back. We are excited to work with them again for our anniversary pictures.
