Facing Your Fears How to use Self-Talk to face your fears

This weeks post is all about facing your fears and overcoming obstacles in the way of you achieving your goals. Recently I had to face one my own fears, I know for most of you this might not seem like a big deal but for me, getting a needle or blood test is a seemingly impossible task. I have one of those irrational fears, that stems from a few bad experiences in my childhood and having to spend a lot of time in the hospital as a teenager. So when I found out I needed to update my immunization I was terrified and my body went into complete panic mode. For a week it was all I could think about, I’d have trouble sleeping because of my anxiety and became completely irrational due to my negative thoughts. After a stressfull week the anxiety had taken it’s toll and I was fed up. I reflected on my past and the strategies used then to see how they could help me know.

I woke up the next morning everything changed! I decided not to doubt myself and to use my self-talk skills to deescalate my negative thoughts and kept encouraging myself that I had done it before and I was going to do it again. I found that self-talk helps me stay in control of my thoughts and recognize when I’m being irrational. Once I had regained my strength and courage it was time to get over my fear! I walked into the doctors and told them to “just do it”. It was over in 3 seconds; I felt such a rush of emotions. It was so empowering to be able to face my fear and take back control over my future! Remember, It’snot going to be easy but YOU CAN DO IT!!!
